Nearly two thirds of virtualised servers will be less secure than the
physical machines they replace over the course of the next two years, according
to analyst firm Gartner.

The market researchers reckon that companies jumping on the virtualisation
bandwagon are doing so without talking to the information security guys in the
next room, leaving the configurations full of holes for hackers to waltz through
unimpeded.

"Virtualisation is not inherently insecure," said Neil MacDonald, vice
president and Gartner fellow.

"However, most virtualised workloads are being deployed insecurely. The
latter is a result of the immaturity of tools and processes and the limited
training of staff, resellers and consultants."
